We are proud to announce our collaboration with the Japanese architecture studio SUNAKI for the exhibition IN-BETWEEN, on view at the Japan Pavilion during the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia 2025.

The result of this collaboration is the Reflective Saucer, an evocative object that weaves together material memory with contemporary craftsmanship.
An enigmatic elliptical shape that follows the Japanese silver ratio, made from wood and steel, with a reflective copper surface with a complex double curvature and wavy finish on top.

The Reflective Saucer draws inspiration from some fragments of majolica unearthed during the 1956 excavations for the construction of the Japan Pavilion.

These elements are reinterpreted in a mirror-like finish with an organic patina pattern that bridges past and present, and also functions as a lighting element in the pilotis space, strategically reflecting the conical spotlight beam upward through a hole, casting its shadow onto the gallery ceiling.

The patina pattern on the copper surface, developed through Alcarol’s latest research into the expressive and transformative potential of metal surfaces, embodies a unique material narrative, one that captures the passage of time while enhancing tactile and visual depth.

As the name suggests, the Reflective Saucer acts as both a mirror and a source — an invitation to contemplation, a portal between what is visible and what is unseen. The piece resonates deeply with the curatorial theme IN-BETWEEN, creating an immersive space that invites literal and metaphorical reflection on the coexistence of past and present, nature and artificiality.

Alcarol’s contribution embodies this vision: a poetic artifact that speaks of the fragility of matter, the richness of history, and the possibility for new meanings to emerge from the in-between spaces.

Curated by Jun Aoki, the IN-BETWEEN exhibition explores what lies in the interstitial spaces between people, materials, memories, and places. It champions collective creation, reuse, and subtle transformation, presenting the pavilion itself as a site of cultural negotiation and architectural performance. The viewer becomes an active part of this open-ended, evolving relationship.

We are pleased to announce that a selection of our pieces has been included in the “Somewhere Else” installation, curated by Philippe Starck for the 30th anniversary of his collaboration with Cassina.

Step “Somewhere Else”, into a realm of timeless elegance as Cassina and Philippe Starck combine their imaginations and savoir-faire to celebrate the 30-year anniversary of their collaboration. A captivating narrative unfolds amidst the creative ambience of Milan Design Week 2024, where Cassina Store Milan transforms into a stage for a poetical performance curated by Philippe Starck.

At the heart of the “Somewhere Else” installation, directed by Giulio Squillacciotti lies the sophisticated Somewhere El-S collection, an unprecedented series of uniquely designed seating elementsthat reflect multiple influences – from ottomans reminiscent of luxurious luggage to armchairs draped in sartorial elegance. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the Somewhere El-S collection showcases a harmonious fusion of materials, textures, and hues, telling a story of refined artisan craftsmanship inspired by the world of saddlery and leatherwork embellished with metal elements, to evoke an immediate sense of comfort and timeless elegance.

Experience the magic of Cassina and Philippe Starck’s collaboration, where elegance meets innovation, and dreams come to life.

« In the elegant confines of a bedroom, a solitary figure captivates the audience’s gaze. Every movement, every flicker of emotion, unfolds like a silent mysterious ballet before the peering eyes, while shadows play upon the walls, weaving illusions that blur the lines between reality and imagination. In this timeless theater of the mind, where anything is possible and poetry is everywhere, the boundaries of time and space dissolve until we are Somewhere Else.”

It is made with the same materials (wooden poles of Venice encased in translucent resin like lagoon water) but with a completely different effect.

For the making of FishEye EXCL. alcarol has exaggerated the reaction of the resin to emphasize the formation of internal cracks like those of a frozen lagoon and also frozen air bubbles released from the cavities that make this wood so unique all over the world.
